Oct 18, 2022Géraldine Poukens

Glowing, healthy skin isn't just a dream—it's within reach with the right skincare routine. For healthy glowing skin, a proper skin care routine is very important. However, with so many products and conflicting advice out there, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. 50% of the people don’t know how to take care of their skin and those who are aware do not know the correct order. That is why most skincare fails.

But, don’t worry we're here to demystify the seven essential steps of a skincare routine, guiding you towards complexion perfection. In this blog post, we will guide you to navigate the 7 steps of skincare routine in the correct order. Following that order will give you glowing skin. So, let’s get started.

1.  Cleanser

The foundation of any skincare routine? A good cleanse! The first and most important step in the skin care routine is cleansing your skin. The cleanser will remove dirt and oil from the skin and deeply clean the skin, great too for removing makeup residue.

Depending on your skin type, you will find different cleansers tailored for different types of skin on the market. If you have oily skin you need to use the cleanser that absorbs oil. Similarly, if you have dry skin you need to use the cleaner that moisturises your skin. For radiant, blemish-free skin, you need to massage the cleanser in a circular motions and upward direction. Cleansing should be included in your daily routine to keep your skin healthy and clean. No matter which cleanser is used, you need to exfoliate your skin with it for 2 to 3 minutes gently with soft hands.

2.  Toner

Toner, an often forgotten step in our daily routine as most people skip it. Yet, a very beneficial one.

Now, what do toners do? They restore your skin's pH balance and remove the leftover particles or impurities the cleaner might have left on your skin. Because low PH levels can make your skin dry, oily, and irritated, this often-overlooked step keeps your skin hydrated, balanced, and ready to absorb the goodness of your skincare routine. The best way to apply toner daily is to use a reusable cotton pad.

3.  Serum

Then comes the serum application. Elevate your skincare game with a potent serum tailored to your skin's needs.

Like cleaners, there are many different types of serums for different types of skins and different types of purposes. From anti-aging to hydration vitamin C, and Hyaluronic acid, serums deliver a concentrated dose of active ingredients like antioxidants and peptides that play a great role in a skin care routine. Serums improve the skin elasticity and firmness and lighten the skin texture which makes it so popular. Serums can penetrate in the skin and give a hydrating look reducing dullness and dryness. People mostly apply it before the makeup in order to achieve a glowing look.

4.  Eye Cream

The eyes are the windows to the soul—and they deserve some TLC!

Treat the delicate eye area with a nourishing eye cream as it needs equal care and protection than your face. That is why eye cream should be included in your skincare routine. Eye cream will revitalise your skin eye area by reducing dark circles and puffiness. Sometimes dark circles can be a genetic condition but using eye cream can help reduce it. A little goes a long way in revitalising tired eyes and revealing a youthful, radiant gaze.

5.  Spot Treatment

Don't let blemishes steal your spotlight! In order to prevent your skin from acne marks, spot treatment is a good precautionary measure you can add to your skincare routine as it will tackle pesky pimples and prevent future breakouts. Common and popular spot treatment is benzoyl or any cream that your dermatologist has suggested you. But remember one thing: never apply any spot treatment on your dry skin, it will make your skin more dry.

Spot treatment is your secret weapon for clear, confident skin.

6. Face Moisturiser

Moisturiser: the ultimate skin saviour.

Regardless of skin type or gender, everyone needs a dose of hydration and moisturiser. Even if your skin type is oily, you still have to apply the moisturiser. Moisturisers will not only prevent your skin from dryness but will also reduce fine lines as it will keep your skin hydrated and smooth. But remember one thing not every moisturiser is good for every skin type. Opt for a moisturiser that suits your skin's unique needs by identifying your skin type, whether it's oily, dry, or combination. Smooth, supple skin awaits!

7.  Sunscreen

Last but certainly not least: sunscreen. Sunscreens cannot be removed from the skincare routine at any cost whether you are inside or outside. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) the mirrors that are used in your cars and homes can block the UVB rays but not the UVA rays that can be responsible for the skin damage. That is why sunscreens are essential in the skincare routine. Protect against harmful UV rays and premature ageing with broad-spectrum SPF that will shield your skin from harmful rays but won’t prevent your body from tanning. Even if you use makeup, you still have to apply sunscreen on top of it. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before going out. After that, apply sunscreen every 2 hours.

Remember, sunscreen is non-negotiable—even on cloudy days. Your skin will thank you for the extra layer of defence.

What about Exfoliation?

Shouldn’t we add another step? The skin care routine explained in step 1 to 7, is the correct order for products application. Exfoliation is more an action than really a skincare. Yet, regular exfoliation plays a crucial role in enhancing your skin's ability to absorb skincare products, leading to a more revitalised appearance. When dead skin cells accumulate, they can contribute to rough, dry skin, enlarged pores, and a lacklustre complexion. By incorporating exfoliation into your skincare routine, you can effectively improve the tone and texture of your skin.

The benefits of proper exfoliation are manifold, offering a range of skincare advantages:

  • Fade Age Spots: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells containing pigment, helping to diminish the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation.
  • Unclog Pores: By sloughing away dead cells, exfoliation helps unclog pores and eliminate built-up oils, reducing the likelihood of acne breakouts.
  • Reduce Pore Size: Regular exfoliation can minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, resulting in smoother, clearer skin.
  • Diminish Acne Scars: Exfoliation promotes cell turnover, which can help fade acne scars and other imperfections over time.
  • Smooth Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By encouraging cell renewal, exfoliation can soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promoting a more youthful complexion.
  • Enhance Product Absorption: Exfoliation creates a clean canvas for skincare products, allowing them to penetrate more deeply and effectively. This ensures maximum benefits from moisturisers, serums, acne treatments, and other products in your regimen.
