Skincare Influencers

I Stopped Following Skincare Influencers for 6 Months, My Skin Has Never Looked Better

Oct 20, 2025Géraldine Poukens

Let me tell you something nobody wants to admit: I was utterly obsessed with skincare influencers. Every morning, I'd watch another "get ready with me" video. Every evening, I'd scroll through someone's 12-step routine. My bathroom looked like a chemistry lab, and my skin? Absolutely miserable.

Then I did something radical. I unfollowed them all.

Six months later, my skin genuinely looks the best it has in years. And I'm going to share exactly what happened when I stopped listening to people who get paid to sell products and started listening to what my skin actually needed.

The Problem Nobody Talks About

Here's what the influencer world won't tell you: your skin doesn't need 47 different serums. In fact, most skin problems people face today aren't from doing too little, they're from doing too much.

When I was deep in the influencer rabbit hole, I was using:

  • Three different cleansers (morning, evening, and a "special" one for Wednesdays)
  • Two toners
  • Four serums (layered in a specific order, obviously)
  • Three moisturisers
  • Weekly peels, masks, and treatments

My skin was red, irritated, and breaking out constantly. But every influencer told me that was "purging" or that I needed to add another product to fix it. It's a never-ending cycle designed to keep you buying.

What I Learnt When I Stopped

The biggest revelation? Your skin barrier is probably damaged, and you don't even know it.

Most people think skincare is about adding things, acids, retinols, vitamin C serums. But here's what dermatologists know that influencers rarely mention: a healthy skin barrier is your first line of defence against literally everything, pollution, bacteria, moisture loss, inflammation.

When you overload your skin with too many active ingredients, especially synthetic ones, you compromise this barrier. It's like removing the roof from your house and wondering why everything inside keeps getting ruined.

The Ingredients Nobody Mentions (But Actually Work)

After six months of research and trial, I discovered something fascinating: some of the most effective skincare ingredients aren't the trendy acids or the fancy peptides. They're natural minerals and plant extracts that actually support your skin's natural functions rather than forcing it to do things.

✓ Magnesium is absolutely brilliant, but you'll rarely hear influencers talk about it because it's not sexy or expensive. Your skin uses magnesium for over 300 biochemical reactions. It calms inflammation, regulates oil production, and actually helps your skin cells repair themselves. When I switched to products with magnesium, my random breakouts stopped within weeks.

✓ Beetroot extract is another one. Sounds odd, right? But beetroot is packed with betalains, these are natural anti-inflammatory compounds. They also boost circulation, which means more oxygen and nutrients reaching your skin cells. The natural redness disappeared from my cheeks after using a cleanser with beetroot extract for just a month.

✓ Grape seed oil changed everything for my dry patches. Unlike heavy synthetic oils that sit on your skin, grape seed oil has this unique fatty acid profile that actually mimics your skin's natural sebum. It absorbs instantly and doesn't clog pores. Plus, it's loaded with vitamin E and proanthocyanidins (powerful antioxidants that protect against environmental damage).

My Simple Routine That Actually Works

Here's my current routine. Six products. All 100% natural skincare products. All vegan skincare products. All eco-friendly skin care products. And yes, they're sustainable skincare products that don't come in ridiculous plastic packaging.

Morning:

✓ This Gentle Cleanser changed my life. Most cleansers strip your skin, removing the natural oils you actually need. This one cleans thoroughly but leaves your skin barrier intact. The magnesium calms any overnight inflammation, vitamin E protects against free radicals, and beetroot extract brightens without irritation. My skin feels soft, not tight, after washing.

✓ I use this Body Lotion on my face too, don't let the name fool you. Shea butter is non-comedogenic despite being rich, aloe vera hydrates and heals, and that magnesium again for calming and repair. My skin stays moisturised all day without feeling greasy.

Evening:

✓ This is where things get interesting. Most people don't realise that what you use in the shower affects your facial skin too, steam opens pores, and whatever you're using on your body becomes airborne. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory (it's been used in herbal medicine for centuries), and combined with grape seed oil and aloe vera, I use this Hydrating Shower Gel that doesn't just clean, it actively improves skin quality.

✓ I apply this body oil while my skin is still slightly damp. The combination of these three ingredients is genuinely transformative. Grape seed oil locks in moisture without clogging pores, magnesium works on cellular repair overnight, and vitamin E protects and heals. My skin texture has completely changed, it's smoother and more even-toned than ever.

Hair (which affects your skin more than you think):

✓ Your hair products touch your face, neck, and back constantly. Standard shampoos are full of sulphates and silicones that cause breakouts along your hairline and back. I use this 100% natural shampoo cleanses without stripping, and the magnesium actually helps with scalp inflammation (which I didn't even know I had until it disappeared).

✓ Once the hair is cleansed, I use this nourishing conditioner. It has Jojoba oil, which is chemically similar to your skin's sebum, making it perfect for both hair and skin. This conditioner doesn't leave a residue that blocks pores when it rinses down your face and back.

The Results After Six Months

I'm not exaggerating when I say my skin has never looked better:

  • Zero breakouts in the last three months
  • Natural glow without highlighter
  • Even skin tone (those red patches are gone)
  • Smaller-looking pores
  • Skin feels strong, not sensitive
  • No more dry patches or oily T-zone issues

More importantly, I've saved hundreds of pounds. These sustainable skincare products last longer because you don't need to use much, and you're not constantly buying new products to fix problems caused by other products.

Why This Works When Influencer Advice Doesn't

The difference comes down to this: influencer routines are about performance and sponsorships. My routine is about science and simplicity.

Natural ingredients work with your skin's biology, not against it. Magnesium, vitamin E, grape seed oil, aloe vera, beetroot extract, these aren't trendy, but they're effective because they support your skin's natural functions rather than forcing it to behave unnaturally.

Vegan skincare products and eco-friendly skin care products aren't just better for the planet – they're often better for your skin because they don't contain hormone-disrupting animal derivatives or harsh synthetic preservatives.

The Bottom Line

Stop letting influencers tell you your skin needs fixing with 15 different products. Your skin isn't broken, it's probably just overwhelmed.

Give your skin what it actually needs: gentle, natural, effective ingredients that support its natural barrier function. Use products that are transparent about their ingredients. Choose sustainable skincare products that don't harm the planet whilst healing your skin.

Six months ago, I thought good skin required complexity and constant purchases. Now I know it requires patience, simplicity, and ingredients that actually work with your body's natural processes.

My bathroom is clearer. My skin is clearer. And I'm never going back to the influencer-driven chaos again.
